A List of HTML5 Game Engines
Saved me a lot of time this afternoon. Sometime I’d really like to review all of these.

Promising engine which already includes collision detection, sprites, events, and entities.
Has anyone had any success with this yet? The WineHQ AppDB has some promising info but none that I can make work on my Macintosh with the MacPorts version of Wine-devel.
UPDATE: I eventually had success with this Wineskin wrapper.
Some years ago I made this version of the Metroid title theme on my Mac. I think it is sufficiently moody/creepy. Enjoy!

Nine text files in which you will find the complete source code for the original Metroid game for the NES. I assume this is the code for the American NES cart version, and not the slightly superior Japanese FDS version.
A write-up / retrospective by the primary author of Thief: The Dark Project’s 3D rendering engine. An interesting historical curio, from the time just before hardware 3D rendering was commonplace. via Shawn Medero.
A jaw-dropping demake of Super Smash Brothers in the style of the original Game Boy. Can’t say anything more than wow at the moment. PC-only.
I’m very happy.
I challenge Bethesda to a game of Quake 3. Three of our best warriors against three of your best warriors. We select one level, you select the other, we randomize the order. 20 minute matches, highest total frag count per team across both levels wins.
That is some legal wrangling I can get behind.
Fascinating look at the limitations of current/past SNES emulators and the solutions to some very old problems by Ben Kuchera. (via Jesper)
This is a really cool idea. Toronto is my favorite city, and it’s because of things like this.
“I would separate out the true independent developer vs. the hobbyist,” says Fils Aime. “We are absolutely reaching out to the independent developer.”
“Where we’ve drawn the line is we are not looking to do business today with the garage developer. In our view, that’s not a business we want to pursue.”
Small developer shops are only ever going to be able to do more and better things. Tiny Wings would make a lovely 3DS game, but we’ll probably never see it. Nintendo’s dogged insistence on sticking with their old ways of dealing with developer licenses is only helping iOS.
The way Nintendo interacts with licensees hasn’t changed in 20 years. It’s going to have to, and sooner than they think.
46 challengers completed games this year. It’s going to be a long weekend. For those of you joining us late: What Is A Roguelike?
A list of all the music found in Double Fine’s wonderful XBLA/PSN game Stacking. I am pleased to learn about the making of this particular sausage.
The list / notes were compiled by the music director of the game, Brian Min.
A short YouTube video series by Virtually Reality contributor Soul Grafitti, in three parts: Setting the Scene, Character Design, Narrative & Culture.
Gamasutra rounds up a GDC 2011 panel with the director of last year’s surprise critical darling, xbox 360 game Deadly Premonition. The game was certainly an odd duck, but had so many varied ideas crammed into it that it was sort of fascinating.
Gameduino is an add-on for the open-source Arduino hardware platform, created to facilitate the creation of 8-bit video games. They’ve already passed their Kickstarter goal. What’s cool about the Arduino is how low-cost and accessible it is. You could, for example, create a new 8-bit games console on this thing. With a built-in store.
I’m hoping to see someone do a panel on this bit of kit at the next GamerCamp.
Like Kickstarter but specifically for video games. This is the first crowd-funding service I’ve seen with such a specific focus, but I’m certain it won’t be the last.
Old documents, unreleased game reviews, and more from a games reviewer. It’s a formatted simply, easy to read, and made up of neat little bits and bobs.
