Does Airport Security Really Make Us Safer?

Vanity Fair says no:

As you stand in endless lines this holiday season, here’s a comforting thought: all those security measures accomplish nothing, at enormous cost. That’s the conclusion of Charles C. Mann, who put the T.S.A. to the test with the help of one of America’s top security experts.

Experts like Bruce Schneier have been calling what the TSA does “security theater” for 10 years now. The mainstream press just now seem to be catching on.

A Statement From Louis C.K.

His direct-download, no-DRM, concert video has sold over 100,000 copies. Louis:

I really hope people keep buying it a lot, so I can have shitloads of money, but at this point I think we can safely say that the experiment really worked. If anybody stole it, it wasn’t many of you. Pretty much everybody bought it. And so now we all get to know that about people and stuff. I’m really glad I put this out here this way and I’ll certainly do it again. If the trend continues with sales on this video, my goal is that i can reach the point where when I sell anything, be it videos, CDs or tickets to my tours, I’ll do it here and I’ll continue to follow the model of keeping my price as far down as possible, not overmarketing to you, keeping as few people between you and me as possible in the transaction.

This is news that I am very happy about.

“The Next Steve Jobs Will Totally Be A Chick”

Comedian Louis C.K.:

The next Steve Jobs will totally be a chick, because girls are No. 2–and No. 2 always wins in America. Apple was a No. 2 company for years, and Apple embodies a lot of what have been defined as feminine traits: an emphasis on intuitive design, intellect, a strong sense of creativity, and that striving to always make the greatest version of something. Traditionally, men are more like Microsoft, where they’ll just make a fake version of what that chick made, then beat the shit out of her and try to intimidate everybody into using their product.

I agree, except she won’t be the next Steve Jobs. She’ll be the first and only whoever she is. via Daring Fireball.

HP’s TouchPad Is The #2 Best Selling Tablet This Year

Ars:

HP’s TouchPad was the most popular non-iPad tablet in the first ten months of this year, according to a new study from the NPD Group. The TouchPad has the second-largest tablet market share with 204,000 units sold (17 percent of the market), trailed by Samsung at 192,000 units.

It’s a real shame that HP was/is too short-sighted to see value where it exists outside of dull logistics and consulting.
